About Hartman Insurance Agency Inc
Milton A. Hartman was born in Saline in 1920 and was a 1938 graduate of Saline High School. Fresh from overseas duty in the Coast Guard during World War II, he started Hartman Insurance Agency in October 1946 when he answered an ad for a Mutual of Omaha insurance representative.
Building a clientele in small town Saline meant long hours, intermittent pay and uncertainty galore. He was quoted in the Saline Reporter upon the 50th anniversary of the agency as saying, “I remember those early days working out of a little cubbyhole alongside a shoe cobbler. It wasn’t exactly glamorous, but I just kept working until I was able to build enough of a base to move up in the insurance world.” Which meant buying out other agents, expanding his product line and abiding by his business Golden Rule: “Treat people right, give people quality and service and they’ll be clients for keeps.”
Alan M. Hartman, a 1965 graduate of Saline High School, joined the agency in 1973 after graduating from Michigan Technological University and completing a three-year stint in the US Marine Corps. Together with his father, Al built the business over the years and continued the agency’s commitment to its Saline area clientele.
In 1994, Jill (Hartman) Durnen, a 1990 graduate of Saline High School, joined the agency after graduating from Western Michigan University with a degree in Finance and Insurance. She enjoys working with family and the variety the job presents. She likes to surprise her clients with a level of service that is uncommon in the business world today.
Milton Hartman died in 2001 but his legacy lives on in the business that bears his name.

Another testament to the longevity of the agency is the consistency in support staff.
Current employees include Maxine Lossing, Jane Simmons and Donna Fraser.
Maxine Lossing, another Saline graduate, started as Milton’s “right hand” in 1954 and continues in the business as the book keeper.
Jane Simmons has been a Customer Service Representative with Hartman Insurance since 1994.
Donna Fraser joined as a Customer Service Representative in 2000.
